Build your first lineman tool kit around the items you are expected to bring and the work you will do first. Start with the required hand tools, give them a practical place to live, and add specialty gear when the assignment calls for it.
The apprentice hand-tool checklist
These are six useful categories to compare with your required list. The examples show what Titan carries; your program’s specified model, size and tool style take priority.
| Tool category | A model to compare | Match this before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| 9-inch lineman’s pliers | Klein D2000-9NE | Required cutting capability, length and handle style. This model is not insulated. |
| Lineman knife | MADI PTOLK-3B OneFlip | Approved blade and tip style. This example is a folding knife with a blunted tip and push-button opening and closing. |
| Adjustable wrench | MADI ALW-12, 12-inch | Specified wrench length and jaw capacity; check whether your list also calls for a separate lineman wrench. |
| Lineman hammer | MADI CMLH-1, 32-ounce | Required head weight, milled or smooth face, and handle preference. |
| Slotted screwdriver | Milwaukee MT210, 3/8-inch tip, 8-inch shank | Tip size and reach. Add other driver types and sizes required by the list. |
| Folding rule | MADI MPFR-6, 6-foot inside-reading rule | Whether the program specifies an inside-reading folding rule or a different measuring tool. |
Your list may also specify tongue-and-groove pliers, a lineman wrench, tape, markers, boots and a tool bag. Add those exact requirements to the checklist. This selection is a starting point for shopping, rather than a complete program-issued kit.
Where we would start
Buy the required hand tools you will reach for first, then choose storage around them. Compare the cutting capability of the pliers and the weight and face of the hammer against your list.
Everyday hand tool

Klein 9-inch lineman’s pliers
MODEL D2000-9NE
Choose it when: your list calls for high-leverage 9-inch side-cutting pliers. Klein specifies this model for cutting ACSR, screws, nails and most hardened wire.
Keep in mind: Plastic handle grips do not provide electrical insulation. Match the tool to the employer’s requirement.
32-ounce milled face

MADI Claw Milled Lineman Hammer
MODEL CMLH-1
Choose it when: you want a 32-ounce milled-face hammer with a claw, staple puller and J-hook remover.
Keep in mind: Check the required head weight, face and handle style. A different hammer may be specified by your program.
For the rest of the kit, choose a pouch or bag that fits the tools you actually carry. The pocket layout and belt compatibility matter more than buying unused storage space.
Add the next tool when it solves a specific gap
For the right hardware: MADI’s ALW-12 combines a 12-inch adjustable wrench with integrated 3/4-inch and 9/16-inch hex sockets. That makes it worth comparing when those sizes appear on your list. Check whether the job calls for a hand wrench, an impact socket or both.
For an impact setup: Klein’s 66031 slotted impact socket covers 3/4-inch and 9/16-inch hex hardware and uses a 1/2-inch drive. Match the drive, fastener sizes and any adapter to the tool you use.
For bucket work: add the storage or hooks that fit the assigned bucket. Our bucket accessory guide separates hooks, organizers and tool buckets so you can pick the missing piece.
If you are spreading purchases out, use tools under $25 and tools under $50 to find the remaining small items. Finish the missing required categories before adding duplicate tools.
Common apprentice buying questions
Should I buy a complete lineman tool kit?
A complete kit makes sense when its contents match your written list. Compare the actual SKUs, sizes and included accessories. A larger bundle can still leave a required item missing.
Do I need to buy climbing gear and electrical PPE first?
Confirm who supplies those items and the exact approved models, sizes, ratings and training requirements before spending. Keep those decisions tied to the program or employer’s requirements.
What should I send Titan for help matching a list?
Send the list with the required quantities, sizes, any specified brands or model numbers, and the date you need the gear. Mark what you already own so we can focus on the missing items.
